Same photo I entered the other day. I used a different method of converting to black and white and now I think I like it better!

The first time I just converted it by image/mode/grayscale then messed with the contrast a bit. This time I used layer/new adjustment layer I used 4 adjustment layers: levels, contrast, and two hue saturation levels. The top hue saturation level was left in normal mode with the saturation pulled down to -100. The hue saturation level under that one was set to color and the hue and saturations were adjusted until I go the tones I was looking for. Levels and contrast were adjusted as needed. I really like the results of this method and the way it helps to seperate the tones. #500120

Firstly - great photo in fact I love all your stuff. Secondly your question....technically the first is better because it has retained the dress detail which you have lost in this version. Having said that, I prefer the more dynamic feel to this. Perhaps a little adjustment on the curves adjustment layer will help to bring the detail back, then you will need to go back and do the contrast layer until you reach the best contrast that retains the shadow detail.
